A collections project is a special operation undertaken by a cultural institution to manage a large number of objects simultaneously for a specific purpose, such as relocating collections, creating new storage facilities, or renovating a museum. Because each project is shaped by the institution’s context and the needs of its collections, it requires careful planning and significant human, financial, and technical resources.
This three-day training course explores collections projects of different scales, from small in-house initiatives to large projects managed by external teams. Using case studies - including the Louvre Liévin Conservation Center - the course covers all stages of project development and implementation, from assessing needs to execution. Participants will also learn about key aspects such as organization, space planning, required interventions, and stakeholder involvement. Experienced professionals will share practical insights and discuss lessons learned from their own projects.
This workshop is part of a Mutual Learning initiative. Through the participation of a museum professional from Split, it provided an opportunity to exchange best practices at the European level, fostering knowledge sharing, collaboration, and the development of common approaches to collections management across institutions.
