Lecture by Prof Dr Oliver Auge
The illustrated lecture offers a wide-ranging overview from the first missionary activities of St Ansgar in Denmark to the Battle of Tannenberg, which the Teutonic Order lost in 1410 in its fight against Poland-Lithuania. It becomes clear that the Christianisation of the Baltic region was regularly a military undertaking, which is why it is also referred to as the so-called “mission by the sword”.
