Children's University to start in January 2026 – experiencing science for young researchers
The Children's University will finally reopen its doors in January 2026. The University of Applied Sciences (HAW), Kiel University (CAU), and the Leibniz Institute for Science and Mathematics Education (IPN) invite young people to experience the world of science up close. The popular format is aimed at children aged 8 to 14 and offers them the opportunity to learn about exciting topics from the fields of science, technology, culture, and society.
The Children's University has a clear goal: to spark curiosity and show how diverse and fascinating research can be. In child-friendly lectures and with interactive elements, professors from Kiel's universities and research institutions explain complex concepts in an understandable way. What do our animals think and feel, how do electricity and voltage affect us humans, or insights into archaeology and marine sciences – the topics are as colorful as the children's interests.
The starting signal will be given on Wednesday, January 28, 2026, at 2:30 p.m. with the lecture Behavior of Cows: How Cows ‘Tick’ by Prof. Dr. Katrin Mahlkow-Nerge from the Department of Sustainable Agriculture.
The HAW's main lecture hall will then be transformed into a lecture hall exclusively for children. For all parents and accompanying adults, there will be a parallel parent cinema where they can follow the lecture. Two further lectures will take place at the HAW in February and March, before continuing in the CAU's main lecture hall from October to December. Participation is free of charge, but prior registration is requested.
