As a palaeontologist, Matthias Alberti primarily studies fossils and environmental conditions during the Jurassic time. In May 2023, he became the head of the Geological and Mineralogical Museum at Kiel University, a museum with a long and eventful history. The origins of Kiel University's mineral, fossil, and rock collections date back to the so-called Gottorf Cabinet of Natural History from the 17th century. A first exhibition of geological objects was organized in 1846 as part of the 24th Meeting of German Natural Scientists and Physicians in Kiel. To mark the 180th anniversary of this event, Matthias Alberti will speak about the past, present, and future of the Geological and Mineralogical Museum in Kiel, presenting some unique specimens from the museum's permanent collection.
