What does it mean in the research community to “smash the patriarchy”—beyond mere buzzwords? In this panel discussion, Norwegian author Marta Breen (“Smash the Patriarchy”) joins scholars and practitioners from various fields to explore how structural inequalities intersect with the production of research findings and everyday academic practice. The discussion explores how power dynamics influence whose knowledge counts, what is measured, and which bodies and experiences remain underrepresented in research and institutions. Drawing on perspectives from gender equality work in STEM fields, gender-sensitive medicine, and applied practice, the panel discussion aims to identify concrete levers for change: research design, leadership accountability, fair evaluation cultures, and safe environments where the expression of one’s own opinions is protected.
